Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) is a European initiative that will provide the information necessary to monitor and forecast the environment. The initiative is highly ambitious due to the diversity of its components (satellites, ground-based, airborne and waterborne elements) and the wide range of its applications. Through GMES the state of our environment and its short, medium and long-term development will be monitored to support decisions or investments. GMES provides a centralized system at the service of European citizens to improve the quality of life in terms of their environment and security. More
